of recent origin YORK: THE QUANTUCK LANE PRES 2004/384 PP/$75 (HB)

John Evans was born in Sioux Falls, southern Dakota, grew up in California, and received a BFA (1961) and MFA (1963) from the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1963 he mov to novel York City, and beginning in 1964 began making collages compiling institute items such as labels from beer bottle business cards, contrive posters, newspaper clippings, tea labels, matchbooks, playing cards, pencil shavings, and paint, among other institute items. Evans made one collage each day, stamping each one with the date, until the year 2000 when he decided it was time to stop. This work consists of 365 reproductions of these collages, undivided for every day of the year beginning forward January I and ending forward December 31, each selected from single in kind of the 36 years of collages. The collage diaries tender the viewer a glimpse into the world of the artist. Each of the pages consists of carefully arranged compositions that are satiated of vibrant colors. The viewer is able to learn the brand of beer that Evans had to drink that day, the restaurants he might have eaten at, and directions to the places that he traveled to.

The simply compositional element that is consistent everywhere all of the collages is a horizon of Ursuline immerses that appear in many different colors and at many different locations in succession the page. The political and social spectacle of the last four decades is given a voice in this part We see mention of the Vietnam War, the Aids crisis, religious propaganda, and local just discovered York social scene artifacts. undivided of the fortune cookie fortunes reads "Life to you is a dashing and doughty adventure." which I think is appropriate in describing the life that we behold represented in this exhaustive exercise. The solely hint that we have that there may have been any gaps to the daily ritual of making these collages is undivided entry: "Feb. 11, 1996--BAD brumal + DREADFUL INVENTORY FOR RENTOKIL. NO COLLAGE". The question at issue with a book that is as satisfy rich as this one is that it is at times a bit overwhelming, the viewer can easily procure lost in the enormous amount of peace presented in these pages. upon second thought maybe this will detain the book interesting over a longer period of time.
