Born Elia Kazanjoglous in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey upon September 7, 1909, Kazan emigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of four. After attending the Yale denomination of Drama, Kazan worked at just discovered York City's experimental Group Theatre as a stage manager and an actor playing in small parts He began directing plays in 1935 and in a short time became the favored director of so writers as Tennessee Williams. In 1947 Kazan co-found the Actors' Studio, the residence of Method acting, and he was also co-founder of the first repertory theater at Lincoln Center He is rever for his direction of of the like kind plays as A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando (which Kazan directed in succession film in 1954), Death of a Salesman and Cat upon a Hot Tin Roof, which brought psychological realism to the forefront of American theater. Kazan continued working upon Broadway throughout his long film career. His classic films include A Tree shoots in Brooklyn (1945), Gentleman's Agreement (1948) Panic in the roads (1950), On the Waterfront (1954) East of Eden (1955) and Splendor in the Grass (1961) Kazan and his films were honored with several Academy Awards.

Kazan had joined the Communist party as a young man yet was eventually cast out of it.
